Northampton, Mass. - April 8, 2023 - The Springfield College women's tennis team battled its way to a hard-fought 5-4 win on the road a Smith on Saturday in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) showdown.
Springfield is now 6-7 on the season, including a 2-3 mark against NEWMAC foes.
The difference in the match proved to be the Pride's resilient play in doubles as earned all three points in very close matches. Gabby Heaney-Secord (Westwood, Mass.) and Ramida Manataweewat (Thailand, Bangkok) were first off the court at the No. 1 spot with an 8-6 win before Taylor Suozzo (Bedford, N.H.) and Kate Rosselli (Trumbull, Conn.) prevailed 8-7 (7-5) at No. 2 and Veronica Fulgieri (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and Alysa Elliott (Gros-Islet, Saint Lucia) earned a 8-7 (8-6) at No. 3.
Smith would even the match up at 3-3 after a trio of victories in singles play, only to have Suozzo earn herself a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4. After the Pioneers would prevail at the top singles spot, Heaney-Secord would clinch the match in impressive fashion by a 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-2 margin at No. 2.
On Tuesday, Springfield will host Emerson in another important conference clash.
