Women's Soccer Rolls Past Thomas, 9-0, In Season Opener

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. – September 2, 2023 – The Springfield College women's soccer rolled to a 9-0 victory in its 2023 season opener on Saturday afternoon against Thomas College (Maine) at Brock-Affleck Field. The Pride used seven different goal scorers and two goals apiece from sophomore Meredith Healy (Niantic, Conn.) and classmate Kayla McGrath (North Adams, Mass.) for the victory.

Springfield, which moved to 1-0-0 on the young season, scored the most goals in a single game since the Pride outscored Mount Holyoke by a 9-1 margin on September 18, 2021.

Healy got Springfield on the board just 1:06 into the contest on an unassisted strike before junior Kate Minoudis (Columbia, Conn.) finished a pass from senior Karly Suppicich (South Windsor, Conn.) just 3:02 for an early 2-0 edge. Before the half was over, Healy tallied her second of the game from Suppicich as Springfield held a 3-0 advantage at halftime.

The scoring was far from over as the Pride put together six goals over the final 45 minutes of play to account for the 9-0 final score.  McGrath scored twice in a span of just over three minutes – one unassisted and one from first-year Lexi Stone (Wilbraham, Mass.) before senior Mu Kue (Hartford, Conn.) scored her first of the year in the 58th minute.

Senior Julianna DaCosta (Rehoboth, Mass.), first-year Summer Chong (Singapore) and sophomore Sadie Crozier (North Smithfield, R.I.) capped the scoring outburst for Springfield this afternoon in the season opener.

Minoudis, McGrath, Chong, Kue, DaCosta and Crozier all scored their first collegiate goals in today's contest.

As a team, Springfield outshot Thomas by a 60-1 margin and held an 8-1 differential in corner kicks.

In her collegiate debut between the pipes, first-year keeper Mallory Forgatch (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) earned the win with one save in 90 minutes of action. Her counterpart Emily Rock stopped the ball 18 times for Thomas this afternoon.

Springfield will return to the pitch on Wednesday, September 6 at 4:00 pm with a road match at Western New England University.
