Box Score Boston, Mass. – September 30, 2023 – Behind a career-high 16 kills from sophomore Maeve Voltz (Bay Shore, N.Y.), the Springfield College women's volleyball program defeated Emerson College in straight sets in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup inside Brown & Plofker Gymnasium. The Pride won by set scores of 25-23, 25-20, 25-18.
Springfield, which is receiving votes in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA)/TARAFLEX Division III national poll, ran its win streak to 11 and improved to 15-1 overall (4-0 NEWMAC), while Emerson's record dipped to 9-5 (1-3 NEWMAC).
Voltz hit at a blistering clip of .682 with 16 kills this afternoon to lead the Pride's offensive attack. Junior Riley Donahue (South Windsor, Conn.) chipped in with 12 kills of her own, while classmate Natalie Billet (Commack, N.Y.) tallied nine kills, a match-high three aces as well as eight digs. First-year Tori Colosimo (Fairport, N.Y.) notched 36 assists in the win and defensively, graduate student Ally Townsend (Hummelstown, Pa.) notched 14 digs today.
Springfield hit a match-high .391 in the opening set and jumped out to an early 7-3 edge following a swing by junior Kylie Wixted (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.). Emerson eventually climbed back and knotted the set up at 19, 20 and 21. A kill by Billet evened the score for the final time at 22-22 before three errors from the host Lions gave Springfield a 25-23 win in the first stanza.
The Pride scored the first six points of the second set, with Voltz accounting for three kills over the spurt for Springfield. As it did in the first set, Emerson eventually came back to even the score – this time for the final time at 18-18. Springfield went on a 7-2 set-ending run that featured kills from both Donahue and Voltz for the 25-20 victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Springfield led from start to finish in the final set after jumping out to a 7-0 lead thanks to three kills from Voltz, two kills from Donahue and two aces from Billet. The Pride built their lead to as many as eight at 19-11 following another ace from Billet and went on to win the third by a 25-18 final. Voltz tallied her 16th kill of the match on the final point securing the three-set NEWMAC sweep over Emerson.
Springfield will travel to Smith College on Tuesday, October 3 at 7:00 pm for another NEWMAC contest.
