Springfield, Mass. – October 19, 2024 – Two first half goals were enough for the Springfield College men's soccer team as the Pride earned a 2-1 win over WPI in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon on Brock-Affleck Field.
Springfield, which earned its third NEWMAC win of the fall, improved to 5-6-2 overall and to 3-1-1 in conference play, while WPI dropped to 8-3-4, 0-1-4.
Connor Policarpio (Bristol, Conn.) registered his team-leading seventh goal of the fall, while
Parker Thornton (Malden, Mass.) earned assists on both goals for Springfield today.
Cole Sampson (Higham, Mass.) also tallied his second goal of the second – and second career game winner to help the Pride to the 2-1 conference win.
WPI as a team held a 19-8 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks, but
Noah Pote (Washington, Conn.) was stellar in goal for Springfield stopping five of six shot attempts between the pipes.
Policarpio gave Springfield an early 1-0 edge in the 14th minute when he finished a great cross from Thornton at the top of the box. Sampson then doubled Springfield's advantage heading into the break as a pair of one touch passes landed at his left foot as he dove into the six-yard box and pushed the ball into the net.
WPI peppered Pote in the second half and came through with its lone goal of the game in the 65th minute when Aidan McLoughlin potted the ball into the back of the net off a pass from Fabio Bastida-Andreu. Bastida received the ball off a long throw in from the left side.
The visiting Engineers were looking for the equalizer late and had four looks over the final 17 minutes of play, but Pote and the Springfield defense held strong for the 2-1 win.
Springfield returns to the pitch on Wednesday, October 23 with a NEWMAC clash at No. 14 nationally-ranked Babson College at 3:00 pm.
