Springfield, Mass. – December 7, 2024 – The Springfield College women's track and field team opened its 2025 campaign with a first place finish at its season opening invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Springfield recorded 207 points beating out Rhode Island College (144), Westfield State (109), Keene State (69), Lasell (12) and Fitchburg State (6). In total, Springfield won four field events and one event on the track.
Autumn Bacik (Watertown, Conn.) had an outstanding debut for Springfield winning both the high jump with a mark of 1.61-meters (5 feet, 3.25 inches) and the pole vault by clearing 3.25-meters (10 feet, 8 inches).
Summer Sobieski (South Deerfield, Mass.) finished as the runner-up in the high jump clearing 1.46-meters (4 feet, 9.5 inches), while
Jillian Scott (Westhampton, Mass.) and
Ella Smith (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) finished second and third in the pole vault clearing 3.10-meters (10 feet, 2 inches) and 2.95-meters (9 feet, 8 inches), respectively.
Katelynn Taylor (Franklin, Mass.) and
Hannah Debian (West Springfield, Mass.) guided Springfield in the throws as Taylor finished first in the shot put (12.31-meters, 40 feet, 4.75 inches) and Debian took second in the shot put (11.71-meters, 38 feet, 5 inches). The duo also took second and fourth, respectively, in the weight throw posting marks of 13.46-meters (44 feet, 2 inches) and 13.00-meters (40 feet, 4.25 inches).
Samantha Paul (Albany, N.Y.) rounded out the highlights in the field events as she claimed first in the triple jump with a best leap of 10.90-meters (35 feet, 9.25 inches).
On the track,
Katherine DeFosse (Worcester, Mass.) was the lone victor for the Pride as she crossed the line first in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.31-seconds.
Julia Brillo (Ludlow, Mass.) and
Maeve D'Arcy (West Hartford, Conn.) finished second and third, respectively, in the 400-meter dash with times of 1:02.52 and 1:06.01, while
Taylor Gibson (Billerica, Mass.) and
Peyton Knott (Leicester, Mass.) took second and third, respectively, in the 600-meter run with times of 1:45.36 and 1:49.39.
Gibson teamed up with
Leah Castle (Ashford, Conn.),
Taylor Desmarais (Berlin, Conn.) and
Elina Olmedo (Wakefield, Mass.) for second in the 4x400-meter relay in 4:44.09.
Kyle and Olmedo went on to finish second and third, respectively, in the mile with times of 5:15.60 and 5:19.59, while
Maddie Shea (Amherst, Mass.) recorded a runner-up finish in the 3,000-meters in 11:06.74.
Springfield will await the new year and travel to Brandeis University on January 18 for the Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational.
