Sorgi Lifts Baseball to 6-5 Win over Keene State

Springfield, Mass. – March 27, 2024 – The Springfield College baseball team held off Keene State College, 6-5, for a non-conference win on Wednesday afternoon on Archie Allen Field.

Springfield improved to 11-7, while Keene State fell to 6-12.

Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, Mass.) powered the Springfield offense with a 3-for-3 day with three RBI, three runs and a walk, while Nate Garafalo (Kinderhook, N.Y.) drove in two and Joseph Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.), Michael Lepere (Beacon, N.Y.) and Michael Barrett (Longmeadow, Mass.) all crossed the plate once for the Pride.

Shamus Biggs (Virginia Beach, Va.) earned the win for the Pride out of the pen as he tossed 1.1 innings and only surrendered a hit, while Max Giacco (Meriden, Conn.) picked up his second save of the season in the ninth inning.

After a 1-2-3 top of the first by Springfield starter Blake Roberge (Warwick, R.I.), the Pride tallied three runs in the bottom of the frame. Traversa led off with a triple to right and scored on an RBI knock by Barrett. An RBI double by Sorgi plated Barrett before a groundout by Garafalo drove in Sorgi for the 3-0 edge.

Keene State answered and took advantage of a Springfield error in the top of the second as the Owls put together three runs of their own on a pair of base knocks and a wild pitch.

With one out in the bottom of the third, Sorgi singled to left, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Gaafalo to quickly regain the 4-3 lead for Springfield. The score was even at 4-4 until the bottom of the seventh when Sorgi launched what proved to be the game-winning home run over the fence.

Keene State got one back in the eighth on a triple by B. Eaton and an error, but Mason Veronezi (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and Giacco shut the door out of the pen to secure the 6-5 non-conference win over the Owls this afternoon.

Springfield will return to NEWMAC play on Saturday, March 30 with a doubleheader at Wheaton College beginning at 12:00 pm.
