Baseball Drops Two to Wheaton, 11-1 & 2-1

Springfield, Mass. – March 30, 2024 – The Springfield College baseball team fell twice to Wheaton College this afternoon in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader on Archie Allen Field. Today's games were played in Springfield due to unplayable field conditions in Norton.

Wheaton, which is receiving votes in this week's d3baseball.com national poll, won game one 11-1 in eight innings with the run rule being in effect for conference play, and game two, 2-1. The Lyons are now 9-4, 3-0 NEWMAC, while Springfield is 11-9, 0-3. The Pride will travel to No. 8 Salve Regina for another league game on Tuesday, April 2 at 3:30 pm.

Game One: Wheaton 11, Springfield 1

Despite getting two hits apiece from Jack Dunaisky (Longmeadow, Mass.), Michael Lepere (Beacon, N.Y.) and Nate Garafalo (Kinderhood, N.Y.) in the opener, Springfield was only able to produce one run. Meanwhile, Wheaton was able to push across runs in six of the eight innings including a five spot for the walk-off in the eighth.

Springfield scored its lone run in the top of the second when Lepere began the frame with a walk, moved to second on a single by Adam Crocker (Windsor, Nova Scotia) and crossed the plate on an RBI double by Garafalo.

The Lyons quickly responded with a run in their half of the second on an RBI triple to the gap by AJ Guindon. Wheaton tallied ten unanswered runs including two in the third on RBI base knocks by Anthony Teberio and Casey Wensley as well as single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames before the five-run eighth.

Wheaton loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth when Tyler Bellan and Tommy Beauregard both drove in two on an RBI knocks to the outfield before Guindon ended the game with a double to center for the 11-1 final.

Ryan McCarroll (3-1) earned the win on six hits, one run and nine strikeouts for the Lyons.

Game Two: Wheaton 2, Springfield 1

It was a pitcher's duel in game two as Nate Kelleher-Mochak (Florence, Mass.) went the distance for the Pride allowing just six hits and two runs in addition to four strikeouts, but it was Wheaton starter B. Oliveira who earned the win as he went five shutout frames, scattered two hits and struck out six for the Lyons.

Wheaton put together its lone two runs of the game in the bottom of the first on an RBI single to right center by Timmy Wagner with two outs in the inning.

As a team, Springfield left seven runners on base and had at least one runner on in five of the first six innings. The Pride scored its lone run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Cole Zalegowski (North Haven, Conn.), who plated Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, Mass.), who led off the inning with a single through the left side.

Joe Mulhern earned his third save of the season as he registered a 1-2-3 top of the ninth as Wheaton completed the sweep.
