No. 8 Salve Regina Tops Baseball, 5-3

Newport, RI – April 1, 2024 – Playing for the second time in less than a week, the Springfield College baseball team fell to No. 8 Salve Regina University, 5-3, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest this afternoon.

Salve Regina, which completed the season sweep of the Pride, improved to 17-2 overall and to 4-0 in NEWMAC play, while Springfield dropped to 11-10, 0-4.

Six different student-athletes for the Pride tallied one hit in today's game including Adam Fine (Wynnewood, Pa.), Joseph Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.), Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, Mass.), Adam Crocker (Windsor, Nova Scotia), Jack Dunaisky (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Nate Garafalo (Kinderhook, N.Y.). On the bump, neither starter got a decision, but out of the pen Tommy DelVecchio earned the win for Salve Regina as he tossed 5.1 innings of relief, struck out five and only allowed one hit.

Springfield tallied three in the top of the first inning, but that was all of the offense the Pride was able to produce this afternoon. With one out, Traversa and Michael Barrett (Longmeadow, Mass.) walked before Sorgi drilled a single to center. An error by the Seahawks allowed Traversa to score the game's first run, while RBI singles through the infield by Crocker and Dunaisky pushed Springfield's lead to 3-0.

Brandon Grover led off the bottom of the third with a base knock for the Seahawks and in the very next at-bat, Christian Homa launched a two run shot over the fence to cut the hosts deficit to just one. Homa opened the fifth with a knock and scored on a hit by Matt D'Amato to even the score at 3-3, while a sacrifice fly in the same frame gave Salve Regina a 4-3 edge. Homa scored his third run of the contest in the bottom of the seventh and gave the hosts an insurance run as Evan O'Rourke plated him on a sacrifice fly after he got hit by a pitch to begin action in the inning.

Kyle Carozza earned his sixth save of the season for Salve Regina as he pitched the final two innings of the game, striking out three and allowing just one hit.

Springfield is scheduled to host Saint Joseph's College (Conn.) on Wednesday, April 3 at 3:30 pm on Archie Allen Field.
