Amherst, Mass. – April 15, 2024 – The Springfield College baseball team fell to Amherst College, 10-7, in a non-conference matchup this afternoon on Memorial Field.
Amherst improved to 17-5, while Springfield dipped to 14-13.
Springfield produced seven runs on ten hits, five of which came from the top-two batters in Springfield's lineup in
Adam Crocker (Windsor, Nova Scotia) and
Nate Garafalo (Kinderhook, N.Y.). Both of them also drove in single runs, while
Joseph Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.) led Springfield's offensive unit with four RBI on the day, which came in the form of a grand slam in the top of the sixth inning.
After three scoreless innings, Springfield tallied the game's first run on an RBI knock by Garafalo for the 1-0 edge. Amherst answered with a three spot on two RBI singles and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame, however.
Springfield loaded the bases in the top of the fifth and
Michael Barrett (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored the Pride's second run on catcher's interference before the Mammoths tallied three addition runs in the bottom half for 6-2 advantage. With two outs in the inning, Jack Dove drilled a two-run homer over the fence in left and Ben Smith doubled in Amherst's sixth run of the game.
In a back-and-forth game, Springfield immediately answered in the top of the sixth and knotted the game at 6-6 on Traversa's first career grand slam.
Michael Lepere (Beacon, N.Y.) and Barrett both walked, while
Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, Mass.) hit a double down the line prior to the round tripper for Traversa.
Springfield's pen couldn't hold Amherst's offense at bay as the Mammoths scored one in the bottom of the sixth and three in the seventh en route to the 10-7 win.
Springfield will host MIT in NEWMAC action tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 pm.
