Baseball Falls to Coast Guard, 7-6, in 12 Innings

New London, Conn. – April 23, 2024 – The Springfield College baseball team fell to Coast Guard, 7-6, in 12 innings, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tilt this afternoon on the road.

Coast Guard improved to 19-8 overall and to 9-2 in NEWMAC action, while Springfield dropped to 14-17, 1-10.

The homestanding Bears were able to force extra innings by scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth after trailing, 6-4. A single by Drew Basque led off the frame and he scored two batters later on an RBI double by Wyatt Duthu. Coast Guard then took advantage of a Springfield error to knot the score at six.

In extra innings, Andrew McCarty (Meriden, Conn.) was the lone batter to reach for either side as he roped a double for the Pride in the tenth. Tied at six in the bottom of the 12th, Charles Red led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then scored the game winning run on a knock by Tate Scherer.

Springfield score the game's first run in the top of the opening inning when Mark Nofri (Naugatuck, Conn.) crossed the plate, despite a double play ball that was hit. The Pride registered two in the top of the third on a passed ball and another Nofri run on a double play for a 3-0 edge through two and a half.

Even at three in the top of the fifth, an RBI groundout by Michael Lepere (Beacon, N.Y.) and an RBI single by Cole Zalegowski (North Haven, Conn.) gave Springfield a 5-3 edge before Coast Guard answered with one in the fifth and then two in the eighth to send the game to extras.

Springfield was able to produce 13 hits in the effort – two of each from Nofri, Lepere and McCarty.

Springfield will host WPI in a NEWMAC doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
