Springfield, Mass. – May 1, 2024 – Graduate student
Adam Fine (Wynnewood, Pa.) stole six bases to tie the most in Division III this season as the Springfield College baseball team topped Dean College, 13-6, in the final game of the year on Archie Allen Field for the Pride.
Springfield improved to 16-19, while Dean dipped to 12-23. The Pride will wrap up the 2024 campaign with a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader at Babson College on Saturday afternoon at 12:00 pm.
Not only do Fine's six stolen bases today rank tied for first in Division III in a single game this year, but are the third most all-time in NCAA Division III baseball history. The record holder is Isaac Taylor of Transylvania, who had eight steals against Centre on April 2, 2018.
Springfield produced 13 runs and 17 hits in the win today over the Bulldogs as
Jack Dunaisky (Longmeadow, Mass.) and
Cole Zalegowski (North Haven, Conn.) registered three hits apiece, while
Ryan Delaney (Ellington, Conn.), Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, Mass.),
Luke DiMauro (Haddam, Conn.) and Fine all tallied two hits today. Zalegowski led the Pride with three RBI, while DiMauro launched his first collegiate home run.
An RBI knock by Zalegowski and a two-run single by
Steve Cifarelli (Orange, Conn.) gave Springfield a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Dean quickly answered with four runs in the top of the second highlighted by a two-run single by Kyle Lancaster before Springfield posted four runs of its own in the bottom of the second. Delaney posted a sacrifice fly to even the score at four, Sorgi knocked in
Ryan Duffy and Dunaisky and Zalegowski plated Sorgi for a 7-4 edge.
The Pride added five runs in the bottom of the fourth highlighted by a two-run shot over the fence in left field. In the inning, Zalegowski and Dunaisky both lined RBI singles into the outfield. Springfield's 13th run came in the bottom of the fifth on a bases loaded walk.
Springfield's three pitchers out of the bullpen of
Aiden Consedine (Holyoke, Mass.), Matthew Robinson (Fairfield, Conn.) and
Mason Veronezi (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) threw the final three innings and allowed just one hit. Starter
Colby Welch (Tampa, Fla.) earned the win on six innings, nine hits, six runs (five earned) and two strikeouts.
