Springfield, Mass. – September 21, 2024 – Two goals in the first five minutes was enough for Salve Regina University as the Seahawks topped the homestanding Springfield College field hockey team, 4-1, in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both squads on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.
Salve Regina remained unbeaten at 6-0 (1-0 NEWMAC), while Springfield dipped to 3-4 (0-1 NEWMAC).
Shannon Kennedy tallied both Salve Regina goals in the first quarter – one just 2:48 in the game off a deflected pass from Natalie Vaughn and one at the 5:09 mark after running 50-yards down the field for the strike.
Georgia Costello gave the visitors at 3-0 advantage after causing a turnover and scoring her fifth goal of the season 1:56 into the second quarter. Prior to the break Springfield finally got on the board when
Audrey Hayes (Oxford, Mass.) redirected the ball in front of the cage off a pass from
Audrey Dolan (Westminster, Mass.) to make the score 3-1 in favor of the Seahawks at halftime.
Salve added a goal off a penalty corner with four minutes to play to account for the 4-1 final.
The Seahawks held a slim 12-11 edge in shots, while the Pride maintained a 5-4 differential in penalty corners.
Springfield will travel down the road to Western New England for a non-conference game on Wednesday, September 25 at 4:00 pm.
