Field Hockey Holds Off Salve Regina in NEWMAC Tournament First Round, 2-1

Springfield, Mass. - November 4, 2025 - Fourth-seeded Springfield College field hockey team beat fifth-seeded Salve Regina in the opening round of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament, 2-1, tonight on Stagg Field.

With the win, the Pride improve to 13-6 on the year which is the most wins since 2017 and it is the first postseason win for Springfield since 2023. Salve Regina ends its season with a record of 11-8. Rachel Simkewicz (Westminster, Mass.) and Audrey Hayes (Holden, Mass.) scored for Springfield while Simkewicz and Hailey Gaydos (Newington, Conn.) notched assists. The Pride will travel to face top seed and nationally-ranked No. 3 Babson on Thursday, November 6 at 6:00 pm in the semifinal round of the NEWMAC Tournament.

Just five minutes into the game, Gaydos deflected a ball off of a corner near to Simkewicz who was able to sweep it in to give the Pride the lead.

In the 12th minute, Georgia Costello - one of the top scorers for the Seahawks - received the ball in the middle of the circle and reverse swept it in for the equalizer.

Late in the third quarter, Simkewicz sent a ball towards the goal that Hayes was deflected in for the game-winner. 

Springfield out shot Salve Regina 15-12 and were even at four in penalty corners. Sam Orcutt (Forestdale, Mass.) had five saves in the win.
