Springfield College to be Represented at Super Bowl LIX

Springfield, Mass. – February 7, 2025 – When Super Bowl LIX takes place on February 9 in New Orleans, Louisiana at Caesars Superdome, there will be several former Springfield College football student-athletes who will have an impact on the outcome. This year, the Kansas City Chiefs have two coaches that previously played football on Alden Street.

Springfield has had a strong representation in the Super Bowl for nearly the last 20 years, including having at least one alum involved in the Super Bowls from 2006 to 2016, and now in three straight seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Steve Spagnuolo joined the Chiefs as the defensive coordinator in 2019 and has nearly 40 years of coaching experience across the collegiate and professional ranks, including over two decades in the National Football League. The former defensive coordinator for the New York Giants and New Orleans Saints and head coach of the St. Louis Rams, Spagnuolo earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Springfield College in 1982, where he was a two-year starter at wide receiver.

Spagnuolo has won four Super Bowls as defensive coordinator, one with the New York Giants and three with the Kansas City Chiefs, making him the only coordinator (offense or defense) in NFL history to win a Super Bowl with two different franchises.  This will mark the seventh time in his career that Spagnuolo has coached in the Super Bowl, as he previously reached the pinnacle of his sport in 2005, 2008, 2020, 2021, 2023 and 2024.

Dave Toub has served as Kansas City's assistant head coach since 2018 after serving five seasons (2013-17) as the club's special teams coordinator.  He began his collegiate playing career as an offensive lineman at Springfield College from 1980-81 before going on to earn his Bachelor's of Science and Master's of Education degrees from UTEP.

Be sure to watch Super Bowl LIX on Sunday, February 9 at 6:00 pm as the Chiefs look to make NFL history with their third straight world championship.
