Baseball Splits NEWMAC Twinbill With Wheaton

Springfield, Mass. – March 29, 2025 – The Springfield College baseball team split a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader against Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon at Archie Allen Field.

Springfield won the opener 3-0 before suffering a 14-3 seven inning loss in the night cap. Springfield's record pushed to 5-13 overall and to 1-2 in NEWMAC play, while Wheaton moved to 10-8, 2-1. The game one win for the Pride was Springfield's first victory over the Lyons since April 10, 2022 and only fifth since April of 2013.

Game One: Springfield 3, Wheaton 0

Josh Mayo (Westfield, Mass.) pitched another gem for Springfield as he tossed seven shutout innings and struck out 11 Wheaton batters to earn his first win on Alden Street. JP Catellier (Springfield, Mass.) earned the save going the final two frames with a strikeout. Mayo and Catellier combined to allow just four hits to Wheaton in the nine inning victory.

After Adam Crocker (Windsor, Nova Scotia) and Chris Balchius (Norwalk, Conn.) roped one out singles to left in the second, Ryan Duffy (Stafford Springs, Conn.) plated both runners on a two-run triple to center to give Springfield a 2-0 edge. An RBI single to center from Jack Dunaisky (Longmeadow, Mass.) in the third that plated Nicholas Lloyd (Easthampton, Mass.) accounted for all of the offense in game one.

Mayo retired Wheaton 1-2-3 in five of his seven innings and no Wheaton batter an any of the nine innings advanced past second base.

Game Two: Wheaton 14, Springfield 3 (7 Innings)

In the nightcap, Wheaton scored single runs in the first, third and fourth innings and then exploded for eight runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to account for the 14-3 final. Timmy Wagner went 4-for-5 with five RBI and Casey Wensley and Nick Ayres combined for five addition RBI for the Lyons in game two.

Dan Surette (Braintree, Mass.) drove in two of the three runs for Springfield in the bottom of the seventh inning as Wheaton held the Pride to just six hits – four of which came in that seventh frame.

Wheaton starter Greg Strite had a no-hit bid through the bottom of the fifth until Michael Lepere (Beacon, N.Y.) roped a single to left field to end the hopes for the visitors. Wheaton strung together six hits and eight runs in the top of the fifth highlighted by a two-run single to center from Wagner and a three run round tripper from Ayres.

Springfield then looked to extend the game past the run rule in the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded following singles by Crocker and Balchius as well as a walk by Sean Lengyel (Wilton, Conn.), Tyler Casey (Wallingford, Conn.) drove in Springfield's first run of the game on a single to center before Surette plated two more in the next at-bat.

Jack Feltovic came out of the pen for Wheaton and struck out the final two batters of the game to end today's doubleheader in a split as the Lyons won the nightcap, 14-3.

Springfield will travel to nationally-ranked Salve Regina University to complete the season series with the Seahawks on Tuesday at 3:00 pm.
