Baseball Drops 2-1 NEWMAC Decision at No. 11/12 Salve Regina

Newport, RI – April 1, 2025 – The Springfield College baseball team had the tying and go ahead runs on base in the top of the ninth inning, but ultimately fell to No. 11/12 nationally-ranked Salve Regina University, 2-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday afternoon at Reynolds Field.

Salve Regina, which completed the season-sweep of the Pride improved to 13-5 overall and to 2-1 in conference play, while Springfield fell to 5-14, 1-3.

Springfield's pitching staff of JP Catellier (Springfield, Mass.) and Nate Kelleher-Mohchak (Florence, Mass.) held Salve Regina to just two runs and combined for three strikeouts in the setback – the lowest offensive output the Seahawks have had all season and the lowest since last year's national championship final against Wisconsin Whitewater.

After two scoreless innings, Salve Regina scored in the bottom of the third as an RBI knock from Evan O'Rourke gave the hosts a 1-0 edge. Springfield had the tying run on base in the top of the fourth before scoring its lone run of the game in the top of the sixth. Prior to Springfield getting on the board, the Seahawks added a second run in the fifth as a walk, a steal, an error and a wild pitch all from Brandon Grover pushed Salve Regina up 2-0.

In the top of the sixth, Nicholas Lloyd (Easthampton, Mass.) reached on an error, moved to second on a single to right by Nate Garafalo (Kinderhook, N.Y.) and to third on a sacrifice bunt by Adam Crocker (Windsor, Nova Scotia) before ultimately scoring on a ground out by Jack Dunaisky (Longmeadow, Mass.)to make it 2-1.

Salve Regina was able to get out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the seventh as a single, walk and hit by pitch put three runners on for Springfield, but Nick Callano got the final two outs of the frame to leave the hosts up 2-1. Then in the top of the ninth, Springfield looked like it was going to score with runners on first and second, but Andrew Wertz struck out the side to secure the save and the 2-1 win for Salve Regina. In total, Springfield left ten runners on base over the course of the nine inning contest.

Crocker accounted for two of Springfield's six hits on the day as he went 2-for-3 at the dish for the Pride. Salve Regina's pitching staff struck out ten Springfield batters – its 13th double digit strikeout performance of the season.

Springfield will travel to Rivier University for a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday, April 6 at 12:00 pm & 3:00 pm.
