Cambridge, Mass. – April 15, 2025 – The Springfield College baseball team fell to MIT, 7-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday afternoon at Fran O'Brien Field.
MIT, which completed the two game sweep of Springfield this afternoon, improved to 11-12 and 6-2 in the NEWMAC, while the Pride fell to 9-16, 3-5.
MIT's pitching staff surrendered just one run and three hits to Springfield this afternoon, while the Pride committed five errors in addition to allowing seven runs on 12 hits in the setback. Springfield's three hits came from
Nate Garafalo (Kinderhook, N.Y.),
Andrew Sweet (Charlton, Mass.) and
Ryan Duffy (Stafford Springs, Conn.).
The homestanding Engineers put together a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame taking advantage of a pair of Springfield errors and an RBI single by Reed Tubbs. An RBI single by John Dwyer made it 3-0 in the fourth before Springfield broke the shutout in the top of the sixth. Duffy singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a double by Garafalo.
MIT tacked on two runs in the seventh and two in the eighth highlighted by a homer by John Spivey to account for the 7-1 final. Matthew Spenner threw the first two frames for MIT before Brian Rapanan tossed the final seven striking out ten Springfield batters.
Josh Mayo (Westfield, Mass.) took the loss and lasted just four innings on the bump for the visiting Pride allowing seven hits and two runs.
Springfield will travel to Nichols College for a non-conference game tomorrow at 3:30 pm.
