Worcester, Mass. – April 19, 2025 – The Springfield College baseball team fell in both ends of a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader at Clark University on Saturday afternoon.
Clark won the opener 4-2 and then run ruled Springfield 15-4 in the nightcap. The Cougars improved to 21-10 overall and to 6-6 in NEWMAC play, while the Pride fell to 10-18, 3-7.
Game One: Clark 4, Springfield 2
Adam Crocker (Windsor, Nova Scotia) went 2-for-5 at the plate for Springfield, while
Nate Garafalo (Kinderhook, N.Y.) and
Chris Balchius (Norwalk, Conn.) both tallied one hit and one RBI apiece. Crocker, Garafalo,
Jack Dunaisky (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Balchius all registered extra base hits.
An RBI triple in the top of the first from Balchius that scored Garafalo, who reached on a hit by pitch, gave Springfield an early 1-0 edge. Then in the bottom of the third, Clark took advantage of an error and a sacrifice fly to tie the score at one before two sacrifice flies in the bottom of the fourth made it 3-1 in favor of the homestanding Cougars.
Garafalo came to the plate in the top of the fifth and drove in Crocker on a double to the gap to cut Springfield's deficit to just one, but another sacrifice fly by Clark in the sixth made it 4-2. The Clark bullpen shutdown the Springfield bats as Tommy Flaherty and Banjamin Spencer combined to allow just five hits, one run and punched out five over the final six frames.
Game Two: Clark 15, Springfield 4 (7 Innings)
Springfield belted two home runs in the nightcap as Balchius went 3-for-4 at the plate,
Michael Lepere (Beacon, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Balchius lifted his second round tripper over the fence in the second before Dunaisky launched his first homer of the year in the fifth.
An error in the bottom of the first gave Clark an early 1-0 lead before Balchius' homer and a two-run single by Lepere in the second gave Springfield a 3-1 lead. Clark, however, immediately answered as a single and walk set up a three run shot by Carter Doran pushing the Cougars back out in front 4-3 through two.
Dunaisky's round tripper evened the score at four in the top of the fourth, but Clark went on to score 11 unanswered runs ending the game at 15-4 in a run rule seven inning victory for the Cougars.
Springfield will host Coast Guard for a NEWMAC contest on Tuesday at 3:30 pm on Archie Allen Field.
