Worcester, Mass. – April 27, 2025 - The Springfield College baseball team split a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader against WPI on the campus of Clark University on Sunday afternoon. WPI won the opener 11-5 before Springfield rallied to win the nightcap, 11-7
Springfield moved to 11-21 overall and 4-9 in the NEWMAC, while WPI pushed to 14-21, 2-11.
In the doubleheader,
Jack Dunaisky (Longmeadow, Mass.) powered the Springfield offense as he went 5-for-8 (.625), scored four runs and hit a grand slam to go along with six total RBI, one double and a triple. As a team, Springfield produced 22 hits and scored 16 runs in the twin bill.
Game One: WPI 11, Springfield 5
Springfield struck first with runs in each of the first three innings, highlighted by an RBI double from Dunaisky, but WPI responded with two sacrifice flies in the second and two unearned runs in the third to take a 4-3 lead. Tommy Burns singled home a run in the fourth, and Chuck Cappello ripped a two-run double in the fifth to push the WPI advantage to 7-3.
Jonathan Lattimer's two-run homer and Matt Shea's RBI single highlighted a three-run sixth inning, and Jacob Wiberg added an RBI single in the seventh to cap the WPI scoring.
Springfield got one run back in both the seventh – on an RBI double from
Chris Balchius (Norwalk, Conn.)and ninth – on an RBI groundout from
Adam Crocker (Windsor, Nova Scotia), but the Engineers stayed comfortably ahead to secure the win.
Game Two: Springfield 11, WPI 7
Ahead by just a run 7-6 late in game two, Springfield used a four-run eighth inning to pull away for the 11-7 win.
Dunaisky had a four-RBI game for Springfield, hitting a grand slam in the third inning and adding an RBI single in the eighth. Crocker recorded three hits, two runs scored, and an RBI, while Balchius reached base three times and stole three bases.
Ryan Delaney (Ellington, Conn.) earned the win with two innings of relief.
After a scoreless first, WPI jumped ahead with a three-run homer from Andrew Cash in the second. Springfield answered with a five-run third, including Crocker's RBI single and Dunaisky's grand slam.
Zachary Roethlein doubled home a run and Gavin George tripled in another to tie the game at 5-5 in the third before Springfield regained the lead on a wild pitch in the fourth and added a run on a Crocker triple in the sixth to make it 7-5.
Roethlein's solo homer in the sixth and Cash's second blast of the game in the seventh tied the contest again, but Springfield took control in the eighth. Dunaisky singled home a run before a walk and a throwing error allowed three more unearned runs to cross.
WPI threatened late but could not rally as Springfield closed out the win to split the doubleheader.
Springfield will travel to Coast Guard for its final road contest of the 2025 season on Tuesday at 3:30 pm.
