Field Hockey Tops WestConn, 6-2

Springfield, Mass. - September 13, 2025 - The Springfield College field hockey team beat WestConn in a non-conference matchup on Stagg Field, 6-2. 

The Pride improve to 4-1, while the Wolves are now 3-2. Rachel Simkewicz (Westminster, Mass.) had a goal and an assist on the day. Simkewicz and Hailey Gaydos (Newington, Conn.) have each scored a goal in the past three games while Ava Coppola (Southington, Conn.)Sarah Goldstein (Cheshire, Conn.), and Bethie Boone (Holden, Mass.) notched their first career goals. In goal, Sam Orcutt (Forestdale, Mass.) had ten saves. 

Springfield is off to its best five game start to a season since 2019 (4-1) and the best start to a season under fourth year head coach Mia Olsen.

Two minutes into the game, Gaydos dribbled parallel to the end line and centered a pass to Simkewicz who scored the first goal of the game. 

In the 6th minute, Emma Spagnolo (Atlantic Highlands, N.J.) sent a ball from the 34-yard line into the circle for Coppola who ran onto it and notched another goal for the Pride.

With 11 seconds to go in the first quarter, Goldstein controlled a deflected ball from an opponent's stick and reverse swept it in to put the Pride up by three. 

In the second quarter, Gaydos added a goal after rebounding a misplayed ball by the Wolves. The Pride drove the ball into the circle, but it went untouched. The keeper tried to kick it out, but kicked it to Gaydos who was able to control it and score. 

Less than a minute into the third quarter, Springfield went on a fast break after Simkewicz received a pass from her teammate and then found Boone who scored to give the Pride a 5-0 lead. 

WestConn showed some push back after scoring back-to-back goals off of penalty corners in the third quarter. The Wolves were able to deflect one ball for a goal and sweep the other one in to put them within three. 

Nicolette Morlock (Rexford, N.Y.) added the final goal for Springfield after she took a stroke that was awarded to the Pride. 

Springfield outshot WestConn 22-13 and also had two more corners.
