Katie Benoit’s '17 Path From Alden Street to NBC10 Providence

Springfield, Mass. - September 18, 2025 - For Katie Benoit '17, journalism is more than just reporting the news, it's about giving back, informing people, and telling stories that make a difference. Today, the Springfield College graduate serves as a Reporter at NBC 10 in Providence, covering the very community where she grew up.

"I think the Spirit, Mind, and Body philosophy at Springfield has really stuck with me in my personal and professional life," Benoit said. "Sometimes getting elements for a story is kind of like solving a puzzle. I feel motivated when I get a challenge like that. And it motivates me to know the stories I research impact a lot of people. It's important to get it right, and I don't take that responsibility lightly."

At Springfield, Benoit majored in Communications/Sports Journalism (COSJ), throwing herself into every opportunity available. She was active in clubs, served on the boards for both TV and radio, and was a fixture on SCTV3's Thursday night newscasts. What began as a dream of becoming a sports reporter soon expanded when she took a news internship at NBC 10 as a student.

"Marty Dobrow was my internship professor, and we had to write journals each week," she recalled. "He was always encouraging, and those reflections helped me realize I loved news too." That realization only deepened as she added a minor in criminal justice, giving her the chance to cover high-profile crime and court cases. Most recently, she reported on both Karen Read trials, a career highlight so far.

Benoit credits Springfield professors and mentors for helping shape her career path. Former professor Kyle Belanger made classes fun and provided a reference for her first job. The late Dennis Gildea left lessons about writing that still stick with her today and never failed to stop by a track meet to check in. "The professors, coaches, and staff at Springfield College really made a difference in my life because they believed in me and wanted me to succeed," she said.

Athletics also played a huge role in her Springfield experience. As a member of the cross country and track teams, Benoit learned discipline, resilience, and balance. "Cross country and track taught me how to be mentally tough and keep going when you are tired," she said. "It also taught me how to juggle responsibility and be accountable, which translates into my job now."

Her senior year was especially meaningful under the leadership of Head Coach Anna Steinman. At a time when Benoit was torn about graduate school, Steinman encouraged her to connect with another coach, Angelo Posillico, who pointed her toward Syracuse University's Broadcast and Digital Journalism program. "I credit them for helping me take a step that really helped me get to where I am today," Benoit said.

When looking back, it's the relationships and shared moments that stand out most - from team dinners in Cheney, to singing along to music during lifts and from cherished traditions like family lunches after the Harkness Park meet to racing at the famed Armory in New York City. "It's an experience you really miss when leaving college," Benoit said. "I encourage current student-athletes to really live in the moment."

Her advice for today's students is simple: take chances. "Take advantage of every opportunity that presents itself. Take a leap of faith," she said. "You never know what kind of journey you will have if you don't take the first step toward what you want."

From the SCTV3 newsroom to covering headline stories in Providence, Katie Benoit's journey reflects the power of hard work, mentorship, and a passion for telling stories that matter.
