Field Hockey Holds Off Salve Regina, 3-2, in Conference Opener

Newport, RI - September 20, 2025 - The Springfield College field hockey team beat Salve Regina in its opening New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game, 3-2. Rachel Simkewicz (Westminster, Mass.) led the charge for the Pride scoring two goals while Sam Orcutt (Forestdale, Mass.)had a career-high 14 saves in the win.

The Pride improve to 5-2 overall and start off its conference record at 1-0, while the Seagulls drop to 5-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference. Today's victory marked the first win for the Pride in the all-time series dating back to 2023 when Salve Regina joined the NEWMAC.

The Pride scored first with six minutes to go in the opening quarter when Hailey Gaydos (Newington, Conn.) received the ball inside the circle and was then pressured by a Salve defender. She passed to Simkewicz who was wide open in front of the goalkeeper and shot it to score.

In the second quarter, Simkewicz took the ball from the 35-yard line and dribbled past two defenders and shot the ball at the diving goalie who made the save. She controlled the rebound and was able to net one for her second goal of the game.

Springfield scored its third and final goal of the game seven minutes into the third quarter when an initial shot from the Pride was saved and then rebounded by Sarah Goldstein (Cheshire, Conn.) who swept it into the cage.

The Seagulls looked to comeback as they got themselves on the board in the 39th minute when Julia Decker scored off of a rebound to give them some momentum. Salve Regina was then awarded a penalty stroke with five minutes left in the game that Bella Gannon took and scored, but they could not net another one to complete the comeback.

Springfield outshot Salve Regina by one while the Seagulls had five more penalty corners than the Pride.

Springfield will host Western New England in non-conference action on Wednesday at 6:00 pm.
