Springfield, Mass - March 10, 2026 - The Springfield College baseball team rolled MCLA in eight innings in a Tuesday afternoon matchup, 21-8.
The Trailblazers drop to 2-1 overall while Springfield improves to 5-1 on the season as today's game marks the largest run output since scoring 21 runs on April 29, 2022 at the Coast Guard Academy.
Nine different student-athletes recorded hits for the Pride while 13 scored a run as Springfield notched seven extra-base hits and stole eight bases. Chris Balchius (Norwalk, Conn.) and Jacob Wagner (Westfield, Mass.) each went 2-for-3 for the Pride while Wagner drove in three runs, scored twice and hit two doubles. Kyle Mitchell (Wallingford, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a double, a run scored and a stolen base.
Brock Goodwin (Orange, Conn.) got his first start of the season on the mound before Brady Search (Collingswood, N.J.) came in the game in relief to get the win after allowing two hits and no earned runs over 1.1 innings.
A single up the middle put the Trailblazers up 2-0 in the top of the first, but an eight-run inning for the Pride made it hard for MCLA to come back from. Springfield's one through three batters of Balchius, Tyler Casey (Wallingford, Conn.) and Michael Lepere (Beacon, N.Y.) all reached base before the trio stole four bases combined. Balchius scored on a wild pitch before a sacrifice fly ball from Nate Garofalo (Kinderhook, N.Y.) brought in Casey as MCLA then walked five straight batters as six more runs crossed the plate in the bottom of the first to make it 8-2.
In the bottom of the second, the Pride added four more runs when Garafalo hit a double before Jack Dunaisky (Longmeadow, Mass.) notched a double to bring in Garafalo. A single from Dan Vidal (Trumbull, Conn.) and double from Balchius would then bring in Dunaisky and Wagner as Springfield took a 12-2 lead.
MCLA scored four in the top of the third, highlighted by a two-run home run from Joshua Bissaillon and then tacked on another in the top of the fifth to cut the lead even more, 12-7. In the bottom of the fifth, the Pride put together a three run inning capped off by a sacrifice fly from Adam Crocker (Windsor, Nova Scotia) to make it 15-7.
The Trailblazers then added one in the top of the sixth before Springfield added more in the bottom of the seventh as doubles from Mitchell and Wagner made it 17-8. The Pride would go on to score four more in the bottom of the eighth as four consecutive walks with no outs would power Springfield to a 21-8 win.
Springfield hosts Brandeis tomorrow at 3:30 pm for a nonconference matchup on Archie Allen Field.
