Mayo's No-Hitter Highlights Baseball's Sweep of Emerson to Open NEWMAC Play

Springfield, Mass. – March 29, 2026 – Backed by the first solo no-hitter for Springfield College since 2019, the Pride swept Emerson College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. Springfield won both games via run rule 11-1 and 16-0.

Springfield's record pushed to 12-5 overall and to 2-0 in NEWMAC play, while Emerson dropped to 2-12, 0-3.

In game two, Springfield College's Josh Mayo (Westfield, Mass.) recorded the first solo no-hitter for the Pride since Brian Johnson completed the feat on March 24, 2019 against Emerson. However, the program's last no-hitter came on March 26, 2022 against Bates and Brendan Kirck and Matthew Robinson combined to hold the Bobcats hitless in seven frames.

As a team, Springfield recorded 26 total hits in 14 innings and scored 27 runs. Tyler Casey (Wallingford, Conn.) led the way for the Pride with a 5-for-7 effort at the plate and came across to score six times, while in the nightcap, Kyle Mitchell (Wallingford, Conn.) went 2-for-3 at the plate, hit his first career homer and drove in five runs. Springfield's pitching staff of Nate Kelleher-Mochak (Florence, Mass.), Mayo and Liam Skribiski-Banack (South Deerfield, Mass) combined for 14 innings, surrendered just one run and five total hits in the twinbill. Kelleher-Mochak and Mayo also both struck out ten batters in the sweep.

Game One: Springfield 11, Emerson 1 (7 Innings)

Eight of Springfield's nine hitters produced two or more hits, while four tallied a pair of RBI. Casey came across with Springfield's first run of the game on a throw down to second on a stolen base before Luke Barone (Monroe, N.Y.) and Adam Crocker (Windsor, Nova Scotia) quickly made it 3-0 through one.

After Emerson scored its lone run of the twinbill in the top of the fourth, the Pride exploded for four runs in the bottom half of the frame on RBI singles by Michael Lepere (Beacon, N.Y.) and Nate Garafalo (Kinderhook, N.Y.) and a fielder's choice out extending the lead to 7-1. Springfield strung together two runs in the sixth and two in the seventh as an RBI double by Nicholas Lloyd (Easthampton, Mass.) forced the game to be called after seven innings due to the run rule with the Pride winning it 11-1.

On the bump, Kelleher-Mochak improved to 2-1 and struck out ten in 6.2 innings of work before Skribiski-Banack closed the door pitching the final out for the Pride. Kelleher-Mochak tied his career-high with ten strikeouts matching his effort against MCLA during his sophomore campaign.

Game Two: Springfield 16, Emerson 0 (7 Inn.)

Mitchell highlighted Springfield's offensive outburst in game two as he went 2-for-3 with a homer, a double and five RBI to complete the sweep. Casey and Jack Dunaisky (Longmeadow, Mass.) also notched two hits apiece for the Pride in game two.

Mayo faced 23 batters and needed just 89 pitches to secure the no-hitter. He surrendered two walks and notched a season-high ten punchouts in the team's first no-hitter in four seasons.

Barone gave Springfield a 1-0 lead in the second on a sacrifice fly before an error, wild pitch and fielder's choice and an RBI knock by Barone made it 5-0 through three. Springfield put together three runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Lepere and a pair of sacrifice flies and then five in the fifth to put the game well out of reach.

Mitchell launched his first collegiate homer over the fence deep in left field making it 13-0 before he came back to the plate in the sixth and plated two more on a double over the right fielders head accounting for the 16-0 final.

Mayo returned to the hill in the seventh and got the first two outs on a fly out and a strikeout. He surrendered a walk but got Vincent Fuller to strikeout looking to end the game securing the no-hitter.

Springfield will return to action on Wednesday as the Pride host Castleton at 3:30 pm on Archie Allen Field.
