Newport, R.I. - April 18, 2026 - The Springfield College baseball team was swept by No. 3 Salve Regina in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
The Seahawks improve to 26-3 overall and 8-2 in the conference while the Pride drops to 18-11, 5-5.
Nate Garafalo (Kinderhook, N.Y.) led Springfield at the plate, going 3-for-7 with a arun scored as Chris Balchius (Norwalk, Conn.) and Luke Barone (Monroe, N.Y.) notched two hits apiece and each scored a run while combining for three RBI.
Game 1: No. 3 Salve Regina 8, Springfield 2
Springfield loaded the bases in the top of the third on a single, walk and fielder's choice before Balchius drove in Garafalo on a sacrifice fly for the early 1-0 lead. Salve quickly evened the score at one in the bottom of the third before exploding for four runs in the bottom half of the fifth for the 5-1 advantage.
The Seahawks added another in the sixth inning before Barone hit a solo home run over the left field fence to give the Pride another run. In the bottom half of the inning, Salve Regina added two more runs for the eventual 8-2 win.
Game 2: No. 3 Salve Regina 4, Springfield 2
Balchius led off the first inning with a single before advancing to third on back-to-back groundouts. Barone then drove him in with two outs to put the Pride up. The Seahawks responded in the bottom half of the first, as Shane Williams hit a two-run home run to take the 2-1 lead.
Salve Regina added two more in the second before Springfield scored its final run of the game when a single from Kyle Mitchell (Wallingford, Conn.) drove in Jack Dunaisky (Longmeadow, Mass.) as the Seahawks earned the win, 4-2.
Springfield heads to Framingham State on Monday for a nonconference matchup at 3:00 pm.
