Springfield, Mass. - April 27, 2026 - The Springfield College baseball team split a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader with WPI on Saturday afternoon.
The Pride move to 21-13 overall and 7-6 in the conference while the Engineers move to 15-18, 3-10.
Michael Lepere (Beacon, N.Y.) hit .500 going 4-for-8 with two RBI, a double and a run scored as Tyler Casey (Wallingford, Conn.) went 3-for-7 with a run scored and an RBI and Chris Balchius (Norwalk, Conn.) drove in three runs and scored three times.
On the mound, Nate Kelleher-Mochak (Florence, Mass.) got the win in game two after pitching eight innings while striking out five, giving up three hits and only allowing one run to score. Jack Richburg (Hinesburg, Vt.) got the save after striking out two and not letting up a hit.
Game 1: WPI 8, Springfield 7
Balchius led off with a two-run inside the park home run in the first to take the lead as the Pride went on to score three more runs in the bottom half of second inning to take a 5-0 lead.
WPI started to chip away, coming within one in the fifth inning before Springfield added two more in the seventh to make it 7-4. The Engineers then had a rally inning in the eighth to take the lead for an eventual 8-7 comeback win.
Game 2: Springfield 3, WPI 1
The fourth inning would be the difference maker in game two. Luke Barone (Monroe, N.Y.) led off the inning with a single, before Jack Dunaisky (Longmeadow, Mass.) followed up with a double to right field. Kyle Mitchell (Wallimgford, Conn.) then hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Barone before a single from Dan Surette (Braintree, Mass.) scored Dunaisky and Surrette later scored on a ground out from Balchius to take a 3-0 lead.
WPI added one in the top of the eighth and could not get anything going against Richburg in the ninth as the Pride won it, 3-1.
Springfield will head to Babson in its final game of the series with the Beavers on Tuesday at 3:30 pm.
