Springfield, Mass. - April 7, 2026 - The Springfield College baseball team blanked Coast Guard in a Tuesday afternoon New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup on Archie Allen Field, 4-0.
This marks the first win over the Bears since the 2023 season as Springfield improves to 15-7 overall and 4-1 in the conference while Coast Guard drops to 7-12, 1-6.
Chris Balchius (Norwalk, Conn.) was 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI while Tyler Casey (Wallingford, Conn.), Nicholas Lloyd (Easthampton, Mass.) and Luke Barone (Monroe, N.Y.) notched two hits apiece.
Jack Richburg (Hinesburg, Vt.) got the win on the mound after pitching five scoreless innings while allowing four hits and striking out four. Ryan Baker (North Reading, Mass.) and Jake Gombotz (South Windsor, Conn.) came in relief for the final four innings of play as the pair combined for five strikeouts while allowing four hits.
Lloyd led off the bottom of the second with a single through the right side before scoring on a double from Barone. With two outs, Casey roped a single to left field to bring in Kyle Mitchell (Wallingford, Conn.) as the Pride took a 2-0 lead.
Springfield added two more in the bottom of the fourth when Dan Surette (Braintree, Mass.) scored on a double down the line from Balchius as he later scored on a throwing error from Coast Guard for the eventual 4-0 win.
Springfield heads to Western New England tomorrow for a 3:30 pm nonconference game.
