Worcester, Mass. - May 1, 2026 - The Springfield College softball team was swept by New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent No. 15 WPI in a Friday afternoon doubleheader.
WPI improves to 36-2 overall and 17-1 in the conference while Springfield drops to 23-12, 12-6.Â
Haley Ball (Westbrook, Maine) and Taylor Falotico (Windsor, Conn.) each had four hits and two runs scored for the Pride as Amelia DeRosa (Miller Place, N.Y.) was 3-for-7 with two runs scored, two RBI, a double and a home run.Â
Game 1: No. 15 WPI 7, Springfield 6 (9 Innings)
The Pride held a 5-1 lead going into the bottom half of the fourth inning as Springfield had five hits to power a four-run inning in the second. The Engineers added one more in the bottom half of the fourth before Sandy Fairbairn hit a home run to lead off the bottom half of the sixth to shorten the Pride's lead, 5-3.Â
Down by two in the bottom of the seventh, WPI was able to score bring home one on a double to right center before Virginia McKinney hit a single to left to tie it at five and force extra innings.
Both teams scored one run in the eighth but once Springfield was left scoreless in the ninth, the Engineers were able to get the win in walk off fashion, 7-6.Â
Game 2: No. 15 WPI 9, Springfield 6
Springfield started off with a 2-0 lead as DeRosa scored both runs for the Pride, one of which included a solo home run before the Engineers brought in two runs at the bottom half of the third inning.Â
Sammy Swords (Plano, Texas) hit the first home run of her career in the top of the fourth, also bringing in Ball to take back the lead, 4-2. Emma Nagy then homered at the bottom half of the inning before the Engineers exploded with a five-run inning in the fifth to take a 8-5 lead.
Reilly Hunter (Wallingford, Conn.) hit a two-run home run for the first of her career in the top half of the sixth to shorten the Engineers lead, 8-6, before WPI added one more in the bottom half of the inning for the eventual win, 9-6.
The Pride host the Lyons of Wheaton (Mass.) tomorrow at 12:00 pm on Potter Field in the final regular season doubleheader of the year.
