Springfield, Mass. – October 20, 2009 – The Springfield College women’s soccer team tallied six goals in the second half to take control of the game as it downed visiting Coast Guard, 7-0, in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest on Tuesday evening.
The victory snaps the Pride’s two-game skid and improves its record to 8-4-3, 3-2-2 in league play. Coast Guard drops to 2-12, 0-7 in conference action.
Springfield was dominant in the opening 45 minutes as it held a 25-1 advantage in shots, but was only able to net one goal. Sue Silva broke through for the only goal in the first half just under five minutes into the game. After Jackie Moscardelli threaded a pass through the Coast Guard defense, Silva collected the ball and raced towards the goal. She then calmly slotted her shot into the right corner of the goal to give the host a 1-0 lead.
The Pride wasted little time scoring in the second half as it pumped in a pair of goals in the opening 8:07. Moscardelli opened up the scoring just under three minutes into the second stanza as she buried a cross from Caitlin Sawczuk into the upper left corner of the net. Less than six minutes later, Jen Jahoda ran onto a long through ball by Katie Mantie and finished the Pride’s second goal of the half.
Springfield continued to pour on the offensive pressure as Amber Thornton netted the game’s fourth goal as she tapped home a Moscardelli cross at the 61:08 mark. Sawczuk tallied her second assist of the evening 1:52 later when she slotted a pass inside the six-yard box to Laura Hofrichter, who lifted a shot over Coast Guard goalkeeper Mary Mills’ head.
In the 70th minute, Ali Dalton added another goal for the Pride as she tallied her first marker of the season. Amanda Pelkey closed out the scoring as she tacked on her first collegiate goal in the 81st minute, with Thornton once again assisting on the strike.
For the match, Springfield held an astounding 51-2 advantage in shots and a 9-0 edge in corner kicks. Mills made several terrific stops for Coast Guard and finished with 23 saves in goal for the visitors. Hanna MacDougall did not need to make a save as she earned the shutout win.
Springfield will now gear up for a crucial conference match on Saturday afternoon when it travels to face WPI at 2:00 pm.
