Springfield, Mass. – October 21, 2009 – Despite a late second half goal from John Plourd, the Springfield College men’s soccer team lost to visiting Brandeis, 3-1, on Wednesday evening on Brock-Affleck Field at the Irv Schmid Sports Complex.

The Pride now stand at 4-11-1 on the season, while Brandeis improves to 5-8-1 and snaps its four-game losing skid.

Springfield controlled much of the possession in the game, but the Judges used quick counter attacks and skillful play on the wings en route to the victory.

Brandeis jumped on the board first in the 17th minute. After David McCoy let loose a rocket from the top of the box, Springfield goalie Chris Walton made an impressive save to turn away the shot, but was unable to corral the loose ball. Alexander Farr gathered the rebound and blasted a shot over the head of Walton and into the back of the net for the Judges’ first goal.

Luke Teece put Brandeis up 2-0 in the 59th minute when he got loose on a breakaway and slipped his shot into the lower right hand corner. The Judges wasted no time netting another goal as at the 63:01 mark, Kyle Gross headed home a Corey Bradley cross just inside the right post.

Springfield got into the scoring action in the 72nd minute when James Ashcroft sent a beautiful ball into the box for Plourd. Plourd then bounced his shot above a sprawling Matt Lynch to cut Brandeis lead to two.

The Pride would get no closer though as it dropped its fifth-straight match. Walton finished the game with five saves as he faced 17 shots in the contest. Lynch totaled four saves on 13 shots as he recorded the victory.

The Pride have the weekend off and will host Western Connecticut next Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm.
