Women's Soccer Powers Past Top-Seeded Wellesley, 1-0, To Reach NEWMAC Championship

Wellesley, Mass. – November 7, 2009Courtney Price tallied the lone goal of the contest in the 52nd minute off a free kick as the Springfield College women’s soccer team defeated rival Wellesley, 1-0, in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament Semifinals.

The Pride will now play on Sunday against MIT at 1 pm for the league championship and the automatic berth to the NCAA Championship Tournament. That game will be played at Wellesley. Springfield is the defending conference champion as it defeated Wheaton, 2-1, in overtime last year.

Springfield has now won its last five games and improves to 12-4-3. Throughout the winning streak, the Pride has outscored its opponents, 19-1.

Chelsea-Ann Patry gave Wellesley a chance to take the lead on a break away in the early minutes of the first half, but her shot went wide.  Both teams remained scoreless for the remainder of the half.

PriceÂ's goal came just six minutes into the second half on a long free kick.  This proved to be the game winner as a strong Springfield defense held off the Wellesley attack.

Sophomore goalie Hanna MacDougall had six saves for Springfield.  Wellesley senior Katie Martore made nine saves in the loss.
