Springfield, Mass. — September 5, 2009 — Morgan Rein and Kayla Sokol combined for three goals and three assists in leading the Springfield College field hockey team to an 8-0 victory over Western New England College in a first round game of the Zenaty Invitational today at Stagg Field. It was the season-opener for both squads. In the second game, Worcester State scored a goal by Erin Moore 3:34 into overtime to give her team a 2-1 win over Brockport.
Springfield becomes 1-0, while WNEC falls to 0-1. Springfield will play Worcester State in the championship game Sunday at 1:00 pm. WNEC finds itself in the consolation match-up Sunday at 11:00 am against Brockport.
In game #1, Rein, a senior midfielder and co-captain from Mystic, Conn., tallied the game’s first goal with 26:35 remaining in the first half. The goal was assisted by senior midfielder Karah Heald (Bedford, N.H.).
Just over five minutes later (21:12 left), sophomore forward Alexa Carlson (New Milford, Conn.) scored the game’s second goal. It was also the first of three consecutive assists for Morgan. The remaining two first-half goals were scored by senior midfielder Becca Gamble (Granby, Conn.) (18:56 left) and by sophomore forward Kaila Dee (New Hartford, Conn.) (15:30 left).
The second half was ultimately more of the same, although neither team scored in the first 12 minutes when the Golden Bears were far more competitive. Freshman forward Jen Califano (Suffern, N.Y.) scored the first of four second-half goals with 22:36 left in the game, The last four goals were all unassisted.
Sokol, a freshman midfielder from West Brookfield, Mass., then scored the first of her two goals with 12:15 left. She scored again with 8:26 remaining.
The game’s last goal was tallied by freshman midfielder Liz Hurley (Holden, Mass.) with 4:42 remaining.
Springfield outshot WNEC, 24-4, including 14-0 in the first half. Freshman goalkeeper Katy Hall (Pawtucket, R.I.) was credited with 15 saves for WNEC, while Pride sophomore Alison McCarthy (North Andover, Mass.) registered four saves for Springfield.
WORCESTER STATE 2, BROCKPORT 1 (OT)
In the second match-up of the day, Worcester State junior midfielder Erin Moore (Brimfield, Mass.) scored the winning goal just 3:34 into the first overtime to give the Golden Bears the 2-1 victory. She was assisted on the goal by junior Karla Rotondi (Tewksbury, Mass.).
For Moore, it was her second goal of the day. She had scored an unassisted goal with 20:28 left in the first half, giving WSC a 1-0 lead at the intermission.
Brockport freshman forward Taryn Rossi (Webster, N.Y.) scored a goal early in the second half to tie matters at 1-all. That goal was assisted by junior forward Kaileen Balzano (Johnstown, N.Y.).
Sophomore Katherine Masterjohn (Warren, Mass.) was in net for Worcester State, while freshman Kasey Schreiner (Hamburg, N.Y.) was the goalkeeper for Brockport. Masterjohn recorded two saves, while Scheiner recorded 12.
