Phoenix, Ariz. – March 14, 2010 – Head coach Mark Simeone picked up his 300th career victory as the Springfield College baseball team defeated Brockport, 6-5, in 11 innings on Sunday afternoon. Mike Corletta came up with the walk-off game-winning infield base hit for the Pride in its first win of the season.
In his 14th season at the helm of the Pride, Simeone has racked up 233 wins during his time at Springfield College. He started his career at American International College down the road where he totaled 67 wins in four seasons.
Mike Cole earned a no decision as the starter tossed six innings, allowing three earned runs off five hits while striking out two and walking three. Darryl Smith came out of the pen to shut down the Eagles in the extra innings as he threw 2 2/3 innings of hitless ball while racking up six strikeouts.
Brockport took an early lead with three runs in the first three innings, but Springfield battled back and took a 5-3 lead after scoring three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Springfield took its two-run lead into the top of the ninth, however, couldn’t close the door on Brockport. In the ninth, the Eagles drew a walk to leadoff the inning, and then put runners on second and third after a single. A groundout to shortstop scored one run and then Brockport tacked on another single to tie the game at five.
Corletta’s heroics in the 11th inning propelled the Pride to its first win of the season.
For Springfield, Joe Kropa led the way at the plate, going 3-for-6 with an RBI. John Schmaltz registered a pair of RBI, while Brian Harris, and Corletta each batted a run in during the victory.
