Springfield, Mass. – March 27, 2010 – Allie Bazzano netted a game-high seven goals to lead the Springfield College women’s lacrosse team past MIT, 17-13, in both squads’ New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference opener on Saturday afternoon.
The win boosts SpringfieldÂ's record to 4-1, 1-0 in league play, while the Engineers even their record to 2-2, 0-1 in conference action.
After the teams traded goals to start the game, the Pride rattled off the gameÂ's next four goals over the next 3:55 to take a 5-1 advantage. A Bazzano goal at the 15:23 mark gave Springfield an 8-2 lead, its largest of the opening 30 minutes as the Pride seemed in control.
However, the Engineers stormed back with three of the gameÂ's next four goals, including two by Erica Little, in a three-minute span to creep within four at 9-5. Bazzano closed out the half with her fourth tally of the opening half as the Pride took a 10-5 lead into the locker room.
MIT would get within four goals on five occasions in the second half, but Springfield was in control throughout the stanza, much in part to three unanswered goals midway through the half. Jackie Moscardelli’s goal with 8:43 remaning gave the Pride a 17-10 lead, it’s largest of the game. MIT closed out the game with the final three goals, as Casey Flynn scored one and assisted on the other two.
Bazzano’s seven points led the way for the hosts, while Moscardelli, Jenn Zubkus, and Meagan Dobson each finished with four points in the win. Bazzano and Kelly Foley each had four draw controls in the win. Lauren McAulay notched eights saves to earn the win in goal.
Flynn paced the way for the visitors with four goals and four assists for a game-high eight points. Little and Stephanie Leger each chipped in with three goals. Alisson Hamilos registered eight saves between the pipes, while Molly McShane totaled five draw controls.
Springfield returns to action as it plays its second game of a four-game homestand on Tuesday evening against local-rival Amherst at 7:00 pm for a non-conference contest.
