WNEC Starts Fast in Defeating Baseball, 12-2

Springfield, Mass. — April 15, 2010 — The Golden Bears of Western New England College strung together five singles to score three runs in the first inning, and went on to defeat Springfield College, 12-2, this afternoon at SC’s Berry-Allen Field. The Pride fell to 12-16 on the season. WNEC is now 23-6

Tony Trubia and Jason Leclerc each registered RBIs in the frame to lead the Golden Bears

WNEC tacked on another run in the second on a sacrifice fly to center field by Joe Griglun.

Springfield took advantage of a pair of WNEC errors in the second to score a pair of runs. Brian Harris came around to score from second after a Karl Quist single that the WNEC centerfielder then misplayed. The second run scored on an error by the catcher.

The Golden Bears tacked on two more runs in the third inning of play on three hits. Andrew Fatse got the rally going with a one out single. He later stole second base. After SC righthander Mike Cole got a much-needed ground ball, Fatse advanced to third and scored on a base hit by Steve Kearny. Ryan Dudzinski hit a two-out double to score Kearny all the way from first and make the score 6-2 in favor of WNEC.

WNEC added four more in the top of the sixth on two walks, two triples and one crucial error. Trubia and Tom Bouvier walked to get the inning started for the Golden Bears and brought a close to ColeÂ's afternoon on the mound. Fatse the socked new pitcher Brian HarrisÂ' 1-1 fastball for a triple into the left centerfield gap, plating both runners. Harris got the ground ball, which would have ended the inning, but it was misplayed by the shortstop and everyone was safe. Dudzinski followed with a booming triple into left centerfield as well, allowing the fourth run of the inning to score. That made it 10-2.

The Golden Bears added two more runs in the top of the ninth inning. Griglun took a one out fastball over the left field fence for a homerun. Harris then allowed one more run on three walks and a single. That made the final, 12-2, WNEC.

The Pride will resume action on Saturday when it travels for a critical conference doubleheader at Coast Guard at 12:00 pm.
