Women's Lacrosse Ends Regular Season With 20-6 Win At Smith

Northampton, Mass. – April 24, 2010 – The Springfield College women’s lacrosse team scored 12 first-half goals en route to a 20-6 victory over Smith College this afternoon in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. With the win, Springfield improved to 8-7 overall and 4-2 in NEWMAC competition, while Smith fell to 3-12 on the season and 0-6 in conference play.

The Pride controlled the first half of play as they outscored the Pioneers, 12-2. Sophomore midfielder Jackie Moscardelli led Springfield with a game-high four goals, while Jenn Zubkus and Allie Bazzano added three goals apiece. The Pride scored their last seven goals of the opening half within a seven-minute span. Smith’s two scores were tallied by seniors Carolyn Whiting and Kaitlyn Murdough at the 20:52 and 16:31 marks, respectively.

The second half featured less scoring as Smith outshot Springfield, 14-12, and their offense doubled their first half goal total. Whiting and Murdough each added a goal while sophomore midfielder Mary Pasini and first year midfielder Chelby Wakefield registered scores as well. However, it wasn’t enough as Springfield managed to score another eight goals, thus leading to the final score of 20-6.

Smith keepers Meredith Kallfelz and Alina Pechacek split time in goal and combined for 11 saves.

The Pioneers are back in action next Wednesday in a rematch with Springfield in NEWMAC Championship quarterfinal play. The contest will be hosted by Springfield at Stagg Field at a time to be decided.
