Springfield, Mass. — April 29, 2010 — A five-run fifth inning sparked Williams’ baseball team to a come-from-behind 7-2 victory over Springfield College in a non-conference game this afternoon at SC’s Berry-Allen Field. The win was the 11th straight for the Ephmen, while the Pride has now lost five in a row.
Williams ups its record to 22-9-1 with the win, while Springfield falls to 12-20.
It was a pitcher’s dual at first, with senior righthander Jon Wurster working for the Pride and sophomore lefthander Harry Marino hurling for the Ephs. It was 0-0 entering the bottom of the fourth.
In that inning, Springfield scored its two runs on three hits with one error helping out. Brian Harris led off the frame with a single up the middle. Karl Quist followed with a base hit to left, with Harris drawing a throw that allowed both runners to move up a base. Mike Micik hit into a fielder’s choice, with Harris being thrown out at the plate. Mike Robilotto then lined a solid hit to center, plating one run. But the ball skipped by the centerfielder for an error, and a second run scored all the way from first. That made it 2-0, Springfield.
The lead did not last long, however. In the top of the fifth, KC Murphy led off with a single to left. Two batters later, Taylor Mondshein blasted a long home run to left, tying matters at 2-all. With two outs, Al Mathews singled to keep the inning alive, and then advanced to second on a passed ball. He scored moments later on a a single by Pat Barren. Designated hitter Robin Allemand then hit the Ephs’ second home run of the inning, this one to left-center, to give Williams a 5-2 lead.
Williams added two insurance runs in the ninth on four hits. James Allison singled, followed by a Mathews double. Barren then knocked in Allison with a sacrifice fly to center, with Mathews moving up to third base on the play. Allemand then produced another RBI single to close the scoring on the day.
Marino was the winning pitcher for the Ephs, raising his record to 2-2. In six innings, he gave up six hits and two runs, one earned, while walking two and striking out three. Freshman Lucas Casso pitched the final three scoreless innings, and picked up a save. He allowed only two hits, walking one.
For the Pride, Wurster is now 0-2. In 5 1/3 innings, he gave up 10 hits and five runs, all earned. He walked one and struck out three. Junior Darryl Smith went the final 3 2/3 innings, giving up five hits and two runs, both earned. He struck out two without walking a man.
Springfield will play host to Tufts Saturday in a doubleheader at noon at Berry-Allen Field. That will wrap up its season.
