Northampton, Mass. – October 4, 2011 – Despite wins at both No. 1 and No. 2 singles, the Springfield College women’s tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision at Smith College in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tennis match on Tuesday afternoon.
The Pioneers swept all three doubles matches and won four singles matches to improve to 1-4 overall and 1-4 in the NEWMAC. The Pride drop to 2-5 and 1-4 in the NEWMAC.
Smith won three doubles matches to open up an early lead. Jaimi Inskeep and Clair Oblamski knocked off Sam Carney and Jen Cleary by an 8-6 score at No. 1, and Jordan Dubin and Rachel Canfora beat Vanessa Senecal and Sydney Striemer 9-7 at No. 2. Eunice Zhao and Bayla WEick made it a clean sweep of doubles play with an 8-1 win over Sarah Morgan and Amy Buttarazzi at No. 3.
Springfield got back in the match with wins at the first two singles positions. Carney earned at 6-1, 6-1 win over Dubin at No. 1, and Cleary came back to beat Oblamski 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2.ÂÂ
Weick earned her second win of the year with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Erin Woodbury at No. 3 singles, and that was just the beginning, as Smith won the next three matches to capture the win. Inskeep toppled Senecal 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 to clinch the match, and the icing on the cake was Zhao posting a 6-1, 6-4 win over Buttarazzi at No. 5 and Canfora earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6.
Springfield is next in action on Thursday when it hosts Rhode Island College in non-conference play starting at 4:00 pm.
