Cambridge, Mass. – November 5, 2011 – The Springfield College field hockey team fell behind 3-0 in the opening 10 minutes of play and could never fully recover as it lost to MIT, 8-2, in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament Semifinals on Saturday afternoon.

Top seed and host MIT erupted for eight goals, including a team high four from Molly Duffy as they advance to tomorrowÂ's NEWMAC final where they will await the winner of SaturdayÂ's second semifinal between Mount Holyoke College and Babson College.

The Cardinal and Gray jumped out to a quick lead, striking for four goals in the gameÂ's first 15:15. Kameron Klauber opened things up with her 18th tally of the season on a terrific feed by Elizabeth Dethy. Duffy started off her big day just two minutes later, as she finished off KlauberÂ's pass from the near post.

Maddy Wharton got in on the action with a blast from the top of the circle on a penalty corner and Duffy struck for the second time to put the hosts up 4-0 less than midway through the opening frame.

The Pride would battle back however, as Alexa Carlson finished a pass from Kelly Gallo in the 18th minute and Lynne Donoghue scored just before the intermission, to cut the Tech lead to just two into the break, despite a 21-7 edge in shots and 6-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Anna Teruya helped stem the tide early on in the second half, scoring the first of three MIT goals over a five-minute stretch, beginning at the 29:08 mark. Following a loose-ball scramble, Teruya took a pass  from Kimberly Barker and lofted a high-arcing shot over Springfield goalie Grace BibberÂ's head for the 5-2 lead.

Duffy capped her hat trick just over three minutes later, as Barker picked up her second of three assists on the day. Klauber added a second marker and Duffy would score once more down the stretch to provide the final margin. DuffyÂ's fourth goal of the day also gave the sophomore 23 on the year and moved her into first place all-time on the single season scoring list at MIT, breaking KlauberÂ's mark set in 2009. The sophomore finished with nine points on four goals and one assist. Klauber had a pair of scores and three helpers while Barker also picked up three assists.

For the game, MIT held a 30-10 advantage in the shot column and earned seven penalty corners to just two for Springfield.

Casey Landry and Jenna Klein split time in goal for the Cardinal and Gray, with Landry earning her 14th win of the season. Bibber had eight saves for Springfield in the loss.
