Springfield, Mass. – April 6, 2011 – The Springfield College baseball team fell to visiting Wheaton College, 12-3, in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest at Berry-Allen Field on Wednesday afternoon.
With the victory, Wheaton pushes its record to 14-6, 8-5 in league play, while Springfield drops to 8-12, 2-8.
The Lyons put together 15 hits on the afternoon, led by an incredible performance from Dan Gusovsky, who went 4-5 from the plate while driving in seven runs. Dan Haugh also knocked in three runs as he went 3-4 on the day, while Sean Munley added three hits of his own. Nolan Corr pitched seven strong innings for the visitors, giving up one earned run off 10 hits as he picked up the win.
Four different members of the Pride finished the day with a pair of hits, including Kyle DiFranco, who went 2-4 with an RBI. James Christensen lasted just 2.2 innings as he took the loss after giving up five runs, four earned, off five hits while striking out three.
Gusovsky drove in his first run in the second inning as he plated Dan Haugh, who led off the frame with a single to right. In the third, the Lyons exploded four four runs, highlighted by a booming three RBI double to right center by Gusovsky.
Springfield answered with a run in the bottom of the third after DiFranco’s bloop single down the left field line allowed Mike Corletta to cross home plate.
Over the next four innings, the visiting Lyons would outscore of the Pride, 7-0, to take a commanding 12-1 lead. Gusovsky pounded another two-RBI double in the fifth, while Haugh’s single to left in the sixth scored a pair.
The Pride managed to scratch out a pair of runs in the eighth. Brian Harris led off the frame with a single and would later score on a Mike Robilotto groundout, and Frank Calabrese single to center to score DiFranco.
The Pride will next prepare for another league-foe when it travels to take on MIT on Friday at 3:30 pm.
