Baseball Scores Four in the Eighth and Two in the Ninth to Defeat MIT, 6-4

Cambridge, Mass. -– April 8, 2011 — The Springfield College Pride scored four runs in the eighth inning and two more in the top of the ninth to overcome a 4-0 deficit and beat MIT 6-4 in New England WomenÂ's and MenÂ's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball on Friday at Briggs Field.

Michael Micik had three hits on the afternoon, the biggest of which being a two out single to right field to plate the two winning runs for Springfield in the top of the ninth.

The Engineers scored single runs in the second and fifth and a pair of runs in the fourth. Ricardo Perez sent a double down the left field line in the second to score senior catcher Dan Hyatt and get the offense started. Hyatt had three of the EngineerÂ's seven hits on the day and scored twice, crossing the plate on an RBI sac fly by Ryne Barry in the fourth.

A.J. Hansborough and Sean Karson eached scored runs for the Engineers, who took a 4-0 lead into the eighth inning. There the visitors pounded out six consecutive hits and scored runs on four different base knocks.

First baseman Louie Nucci went 3-4 with an RBI for the Pride, while John Schmaltz and Mike McGowan each had two hits and a run scored.

Freshman pitcher Kiel Jindra went seven and a third innings for MIT. He threw shutout ball for seven innings and struck out eight batters, but ran into trouble in the eighth and was tagged for four runs. Henry Zhu pitched an inning and two thirds in relief and took the loss for MIT.

Springfield starter Steve Forbes was spared a decision after allowing four runs on six hits in six innings. Adam DeFelice worked three innings and allowed just one hit to earn the victory.

MIT falls to 14-8 on the year, with an 8-5 NEWMAC record. Springfield picks up their third conference win (3-8) and improves to 9-12 overall. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at Springfield, with the first pitch at 12:00 PM.
