Men's Soccer Nets Three in the Second Half To Best MIT, 3-1

Box Score

Cambridge, Mass. – October 13, 2012Scott Saucier registered three assists to lead the Springfield College men’s soccer team to a 3-1 win at MIT in a critical New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) clash on Saturday.

MIT’s record dipped to 8-3-1 and 1-2-1 in conference play as it lost for the first time since Sept. 15. Springfield has now strung together three-straight victories to improve to 5-8-1 and 2-2 in NEWMAC play.

Within three minutes of the start of the game, sophomore keeper Sam Cannon already had to make a save, starting the game off at a very fast pace. Three minutes later, MIT’s Chris Hammond made his first shot at goal but it was thwarted by goalie Brett Bascom, who would go on to see a lot of action during the game. In the first half, Springfield outshot MIT, 8-5. Cannon saved half of those shots, while Bascom only had to save two.

The second period began with a tied score of 0-0, but that soon changed when Michael Fowler scored Springfield’s first goal in the 48th minute. Seven minutes later, Danny Amato scored the second goal of the day when the ball deflected into the far left side of the net. MIT really turned up the aggression, making seven shots in the next 20 minutes, four of which were saved.

In the 76th minute, Zach Dutter lobbed the ball past Cannon to score Springfield’s third and final goal of the game, leaving it with a sizeable lead over the Engineers. Finally, in the 86th minute, Hammond shot the ball past Bascom’s outstretched hands and into the far left side of the net, putting MIT on the board. The late rally was not enough to catch up, however, and the score remained at 3-1 as the clock ran out.
