Springfield, Mass. – March 24, 2012 – The visiting Amherst College women’s lacrosse team reeled off nine-straight goals midway through the first half and never looked back as it downed Springfield College, 14-10, on Stagg Field on a rainy Wednesday evening in non-conference play.

The Lord Jeffs, who were ranked ninth in the country in this week’s IWLCA national poll, have now won five in a row to improve to 5-1. The loss evens the Pride’s record to 4-4.

Jackie Moscardelli netted a hat trick in the loss, while Michelle Dorsey added two goals and three draw controls. Anne Versprille finished the night with eight saves, all of which came in the second half.

Wyatt Davis paced Amherst with four goals and an assist, and Elizabeth Ludlow found the back of the cage three times. Alex Philie dominated the draws with seven draw controls, and Annelies O’Dea caused three turnovers. Lamia Harik needed to make just three saves to earn the win in goal.

Springfield jumped out to a quick 2-1 lead 5:40 into the contest as Allie Davis and Brittany LeGuellaff sandwiched a pair of free-position goals around a free-position strike from Ludlow.

However, the Lord Jeffs would find their stride and pour in nine-straight goals to take a commanding 10-2 lead. Davis led the way for the visitors in the run with three goals and an assist.

Moscardelli finally broke Springfield’s scoring drought on a great finish with 9:50 remaining after she spun through a pair of defenders a ripped a shot into the back of the cage. The Lord Jeffs answered back with a goal from Marta Randall to make it an 11-3 ball game.

Springfield battled back in the final minutes of the opening half and used goals from Dorsey and Meghan Flanagan to head into halftime trailing 11-5.

The visitors scored three of the first four goals of the second half to extend their lead to 14-6 with 9:52 remaining. The Pride closed out the game with a display of offensive firepower in the waning minutes, netting four goals in the final 1:18 to make it a 14-10 final.

Amherst outshot the Pride, 33-16 for the game and each team won 13 draw controls. Springfield was especially efficient on their free-position shots, scoring on all five chances.

Springfield will play again on Saturday in a rematch of last season’s New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship when it travels to take on Babson. First draw will be at 12:00 pm.
