Women's Lacrosse Prevails Over Mount Holyoke, 14-8

Springfield, Mass. – April 21, 2012Kelly Gallo registered six points on four goals and two assists to lift the Springfield College women’s lacrosse team to a 14-8 win over Mount Holyoke on Saturday afternoon in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.

The victory brought SpringfieldÂ's record to 9-7, 5-1 in league play and locked up the second seed for the NEWMAC Championship. The Lyons drop to 6-8, 1-5.

As the second-seed Springfield will now prepare for the upcoming NEWMAC Championship, which will take place April 28-29 at top-seeded Babson College.

Three of Gallo’s four goals came in the final 6:21 of the contest to break open a 10-8 contest. Jackie Moscardelli added four goals, three caused turnovers, and an assist, while Meghan Flanagan posted two goals, five draw controls, and an assist. Kelly Foley caused four turnovers and Ellie Getchell notched five ground balls and three caused turnovers. In goal, Anne Versprille was credited with nine saves.

Molly Macdonald had a team-best three points off two assists and a goal, while both Naomi Miller and Kirsten Kilburn had two goals for the visitors. Annabel Barrett scooped four ground balls and caused two turnovers. Between the pipes, starter Jamie Theophilos made just four saves while surrendering eight first-half goals as she was charged with the loss. Liz Malenfant played a strong second half in goal, making seven saves.

Moscardelli set the tone early for the Pride, scoring two goals and assisting on another to give Springfield a 3-0 advantage with 22:41 on the clock. Bombard answered back for the visitors with a free-position strike, before Gallo and Naomi Miller traded unassisted goals, making it a 4-2 game with 18:17 to play.

The Pride scored four of the final five goals of the first half to head into halftime with an 8-3 lead. Springfield used goals from four different scorers, getting markers from Moscardelli, LeGuelaff, Kerstin Lindrooth, and Flanagan.

Flanagan scored 2:14 into the second half to make it a six-goal game and it appeared that the Pride would cruise to victory. The Lyons changed things quickly, pouring in four goals from four different players in a 1:38 span to get within two at 9-7.

Allie Davis gave Springfield a three-goal cushion after finishing a Michelle Dorsey feed from behind the cage, only to have Mount Holyoke’s Kirsten Kilburn answer back with a terrific goal with 7:40 left.

The Pride closed out the game with the final four goals, all of which were unassisted. Gallo scored three times for Springfield and Moscardelli added her fourth of the day as the Pride won by a six-goal margin.
