New London, Conn. – September 15, 2012 – The Springfield College men’s soccer team nearly escaped with a draw on the road, however a goal in the 107th minute lifted host Coast Guard to a 2-1 double overtime victory in the New England WomenÂ's and MenÂ's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener on Saturday.
Jake Rendon settled a volley just inside the box and blasted a shot into the upper left corner for his first goal of the season to complete the Bears victory.
Rendon was involved in the first goal for the Bears as well when his shot was deflected by Springfield goalie, Brett Bascom, and junior Robert Copeland was there to cash in his first goal of the season in the 51st minute, giving Coast Guard a 1-0 lead.
Springfield tied up the match in the 72nd minute when junior Danny Amato scored on a free kick following a Coast Guard handball just outside the box. Amato tucked a shot into the upper right corner, just past diving goaltender Richie Burns.
Burns made four saves in the win while Bascom turned away six shots for the Pride.
Springfield hits the field again on Sunday when it travels to Eastern Connecticut State in a rematch of last year’s NCAA Championship First Round.
