Springfield, Mass. — September 19, 2012 — Emily Little propelled the sixth-ranked Amherst women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Springfield College this afternoon at sunny Brock-Affleck Field at the Irv Schmid Sports Complex. The lone goal was scored with 9:42 remaining in the contest.

With the victory, the Lord Jeffs are now 3-0, while Springfield falls to 4-2.

Each team had its chances throughout. The score was 0-0 at halftime.

But in the second half, there were more scoring opportunities. Finally with just under 10 minutes remaining, Amherst’s Little, a senior defender from Sherborn, Mass., received a corner kick from freshman midfielder Jessy Hale (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.). Following a scramble from directly out front, Little poked it into the net.

With about 20 minutes left, junior midfielder Kate Sisk (Sudbury, Mass.) had a great opportunity for Amherst, but her shot hit the left goalpost. Then with 12:15 left, junior forward Chloe McKenzie (Upper Marlboro, Md.) had a one-on-one with SC senior goalkeeper Erin Greenstein (Framingham, Mass.), but Greenstein just tipped McKenzie’s shot wide.

Following Little’s goal, SC had a great chance with about two minutes remaining when junior midfielder Ashley Carresi (Billerica, Mass.) fired a shot from about 15 yards out, only to hit the left goalpost.

Amherst won the overall shots battle, 8-7, including actual shots on goal, 6-3. The Pride finished with five corner kicks to the Lord Jeff’s three.

Greenstein finished with four saves for SC. Holly Burwick finished with three saves for Amherst. Amherst has still not allowed a goal this season.

Saturday, SC will host Smith in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference game at 1 pm.
