Williamstown, Mass. – December 7, 2013 – The Springfield College men's basketball team put forth a furious second-half rally, but was unable to seal its upset bid as seventh-ranked Williams prevailed, 80-75, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

This was the second team ranked in the top 10 of the d3Hoops.com national poll that Springfield has battled with this season. Earlier this year, then 8th-ranked Hampden-Sydney held on for an 89-82 overtime victory. Springfield is now 5-2 this season, while the Ephs won their seventh-straight game to improve to 7-1.

Tim Swenson (Millbury, Mass.) netted a career-best 19 points to go along with a game-high 13 rebounds, while Alex Garstka (Westfield, Mass.) came off the bench to score 16 points.

Robbie Burke (Cheshire, Mass.) added 13 points and eight boards, and Sean Martin (Rindge, N.H.) registered 12 points.

For the game, Springfield's bench outscored the Williams reserves, 31-2. All five of the Ephs starters scored in double figures, with Taylor Epley tallying a game-high 20 points.

Springfield found themselves down 10 midway through the first half, as the Ephs held a double-digit lead for much of the opening 20 minutes of play. However, consecutive buckets by Swenson in the final 1:22 made it a eight point game at the half with Williams holding a 41-33 lead.

The Williams lead ballooned to 14 after a three-pointer pushed the score to 51-37 with 15:53 left in regulation. Springfield responded with a spirited run, scoring 12 of the game's next 14 points to get within 53-49 following a trifecta from Nick McKenna (Danvers, Mass.) just over four minutes later.

Springfield would finally tie the game for the first time all afternoon after a Swenson free throw knotted things at 66 all with 4:08 on the clock. The teams traded layups, but Williams made the most of their free-throw attempts, hitting 9-of-10 down the stretch to hang on for the win.

For the game, Williams hit 25-of-28 from the charity stripe, and canned 11 of their 24 attempts from beyond the arc, while Springfield held a 37-27 edge on the glass.

The Pride will now prepare to travel for a clash with local-foe Westfield State, which will take place this upcoming Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
