Roger Williams Rallies Past Baseball, 11-6

Box Score

Bristol, R.I. – April 10, 2013 – Despite owning an early 3-0 lead, the Springfield College baseball team surrendered six runs in the fifth inning as it was defeated by Roger Williams, 11-6, on Wednesday afternoon on Paolino Field.

With the non-conference setback, the Pride are now 9-12 on the year, while Roger Williams won its sixth-straight contest to improve to 16-11.

Springfield got on the board in the top of the first, when Mike McGowan knocked a two-out triple to center, then scored on a skipped throw from short to first on the following at-bat.

The Pride added two more in the third, beginning with an RBI single by Jared Hopkins to score Ryan Gower. Matt Milano later followed with an RBI single of his own, bringing in Hopkins to give Springfield a 3-0 lead.

The Hawks were able to get on the board in the fourth, with Reid Nelson scoring from second on an RBI single by Shawn Cariglio. Soon after, the Hawks were able to gain the lead in the fifth, scoring six runs in the frame to take a 7-3 advantage. All six of RWUÂ's runs came with two outs in the inning, including misplayed line drive at first that allowed Cariglio and Chris Travers to score.

The Hawks added four more runs in the bottom of the seventh, again with all runs coming with two outs. Trevor Larson brought home Travers and Adam Risman with a two-RBI single. Mike Pascarella also knocked in a pair of Hawks, as Larson and Mike Thomas scored on his two-RBI double.

Springfield was able to get two runs back in the top of the eighth, as Brent Poulin hit a two-RBI double to center, scoring McGowan and Louis Ballas. Yet in the end, the Hawks were able to hold on to their five-run lead for the win. Brendan Telfer logged his first win of the season, going seven innings while allowing four runs (three earned) with six strikeouts. Nelson finished 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, while Cariglio and Pascarella each went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Jack Porter took the loss for Springfield, giving up five runs (three earned) in one inning of relief of Dan Green, who allowed one run in 3.2 innings. McGowan went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while Poulin was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Springfield will now put its focus on the final three-game conference series of the year against nationally-ranked Wheaton College. The Pride will travel to play the Lyons on Friday before a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Berry-Allen Field.
