Springfield, Mass. – April 13, 2013 – As it continued to make its push for postseason play, the Springfield College baseball team earned a critical split with Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon at Berry-Allen Field in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.

Springfield College pitcher Oliver Collette and Wheaton pitcher Nick Filloramo each tossed a gem in the split. Wheaton, who entered the week ranked 12th in the country in the latest D3Baseball.com poll, is now 20-7 overall and 11-2 in league play, while Springfield goes to 10-13 overall and 7-9 in the NEWMAC.

In the bottom of the third inning of the first game, Jared Hopkins reached base after getting hit by a pitch. The next batter, Steve Starr, singled to right field, advancing Hopkins to second, and a Kyle DiFranco walk loaded the bases. Frank Calabrese bounced back from being in the hole to walk, scoring Hopkins for the first run of the game. Mike McGowan gave the Pride a comfortable 3-0 lead by ripping a single up the middle to score Starr and DiFranco.

Collette was the story of the game as he threw all seven innings, allowing five hits, one run, and striking out five in route to his second win of the season. WheatonÂ's Corey Laliberte picked up his first loss, going five and one-third innings, giving up seven hits, four walks, and allowing three to cross the plate. Dan Gusovsky went 1-3 at the plate, driving in the Lyons only run of the game.

In the second game, Wheaton did all the scoring as the Lyons shut out the Pride, 4-0. Matt Lavanchy did much of the damage for the Lyons, recording a single and a three-run double. Wheaton was led by starting pitcher Nick Filloramo, who went seven innings, allowing six hits and giving up no runs. Relievers Dumas and Grant came in for the last two innings of shutout relief.

Springfield starting pitcher Greg Marakovits suffered the loss, going seven and two-thirds innings allowing eight hits and surrendering four runs. Calabrese had a good day at the plate, going 3-for-4.

Springfield and Wheaton will wrap up their three-game set on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
