Springfield, Mass. – April 15, 2013 – The Springfield College baseball team lost its final conference game of the season on Monday afternoon in a 7-5 decision to Coast Guard at Berry-Allen Field in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.

Springfield falls to 10-15 overall and 7-11 league action, while Coast Guard improves to 19-11 overall and 9-7 in conference play.

Both teams totaled 12 hits in the contest, with Coast Guard’s Tyler Babkiewich and Nolan Gallagher each recording three hits in the win. For the Pride, Mike McGowan produced a team-best three hits.

Coast Guard got off to a hot start hitting four-straight singles in the first to drive in three runs. In the bottom half, Frank Calabrese walked before McGowan hit a rocket into right field, scoring Calabrese as McGowan coasted into third with a triple.

In the third inning, Ed Sella hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Gallagher as Coast Guard increased their lead to 4-1. The Pride answered back again in the bottom half, thanks to Jared Hopkins leading off the frame with a single before eventually moving to third. After falling behind in the count, Sean Smith was able to produce a sac fly of his own to make it a two-run game.

The teams traded runs in the fifth and sixth to allow Coast Guard to own a 5-3 lead heading into the ninth. The Bears tacked on two more on a Babkiewich single and an error by Springfield, pushing lead to four. The Pride made a late rally with two outs when pinch hitter Brett Poulin singled in McGowan and Matt Milano also had an RBI single to plate Smith, but Vieira was able to force the ground out to end the rally.

Eric Chase suffered the loss 5.0 innings giving up 10 hits and allowing five runs. Reliever Peter Baranski pitched the last four innings allowing two runs and striking out four. Coast Guard starting pitcher Kyle Wood picked up the victory, going six innings and scattering six hits while surrendering up three runs. Closer Tyler Vieira recorded his eighth save on the season.

The Pride will now take on Nichols on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 pm.
